Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

In Georgia, there are many strict laws set in place to protect residents in nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. Despite these laws, Georgia still receives many cases and claims of nursing home abuse and neglect each year. According to the Department of Human Services, there are many types of elderly, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and negligence.

Unfortunately, these types of cases are starting to become more popular throughout Georgia since 2010. To combat these types of cases, Georgia has passed new laws that require fingerprint records to be entered into a nationwide database for employees to prevent prior offenders the opportunity of being hired at other nursing homes. Further, background checks are now mandatory for all interviewees and employees in regular contact with residents. Owners are also subjected to background checks and must be licensed to operate.

Warning signs of elderly physical or emotional abuse including the following:

  • Improper use of restraints or medications
  • Suspicious bruising or injuries with residents not consistent with medical diagnosis
  • Dramatic weight losses or other signs of malnourishment
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Misuse of financial funds or valuables, and the forging of legal documents without consent.
